Just like we have chosen family, to me QC feels like a chosen home. From the moment I pull into the campground, both familiar and new faces welcome me like a family reunion, but the good kind. By the end of the weekend, you’re hugging, in tears, and making plans to meet up with new friends you’ve felt you’ve known forever before a whole year needs to pass again.
I went to my first Queerclimbtastic in 2023, and immediately I knew I'd try to come every year. Climbing, dancing, and exploring with an accepting and friendly group of people, in one of the most beautiful places in the world!
I have been to Queerclimbtastic for 3 years starting in 2021, and each year was better than the last. The first year I went, I was very excited as a local to WV to have found a queer climbing event, but as someone who is introverted in big groups and a novice climber. The first day felt a little overwhelming as I was the only transwoman there that year and had to find belay buddies. Thankfully, I found great people, and the following year was much easier, more inviting, and there were a lot more folks from queer alphabet. I even volunteered to do some graphic design work at the event. The third has been the best so far with meet-up groups, more local business/ organization engagement, and more activities post climbing. I'm excited to see what's to come in the following years!
